Watertown police arrested a man last Thursday for allegedly trying to snatch a woman's purse from her grocery cart in the Stop and Shop parking lot.

Watertown police arrested a man Thursday after he allegedly tried -- and failed -- to snatch a woman's purse in the Stop and Shop grocery store's parking lot on Watertown Street.

A woman was pushing her grocery cart to her car Thursday just before 6:30 p.m. when the suspect allegedly grabbed her purse out of the cart, Watertown police said.

The woman chased the snatcher, eventually catching up with him and struggling to take her pocketbook back. At one point, the suspect allegedly dragged the woman in the parking lot during the struggle, authorities said.

However, the woman succeeded in recovering her purse, police said.

The purse snatcher, who was arrested by Watertown police, is not thought to be responsible for a string of pocketbook robberies that happened in downtown Waltham in the past two weeks, said Watertown Police Lt. Michael Lawn.
