The Discovery Museums to celebrate dinosaur Bessie’s birthday

Bessie, the big, green dinosaur that has graced the front lawn of The Discovery Museums since opening in 1982, is celebrating her 31st birthday on June 29 and 30.

The birthday bash celebration includes a weekend of family activities including a dinosaur dig, dinosaur egg hunt, live animals with the Blue Hills Trailside Museum, music from The Justin Meyer Swing Trio, and a Rhythm Kids Family Concert, according to a press release.

Bessie’s Birthday Bash is free with daily admission: $11.00 for adults and children, $10.00 for seniors, and free for children under 1 and members.

The Discovery Museums are located at 177 Main Street, and open from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

The weekend schedule is as follows:

Saturday, June 29
Outdoor Dinosaur Dig
All Day, Children’s Discovery
Conduct your own paleontology dig in our giant outdoor sandbox. Bring a dinosaur and join in the fun! We’ll provide the sand, tools, and fossils.

Face Painting Fun!
All Day, Children’s Discovery
Visit our face painting cart to decorate your cheek or hand with a colorful work of art!

Happy Birthday Bessie Party Hats and Noise Makers
Drop-in 10:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m., Children’s Discovery Museum
Create a Fancy Party Hat and some noise makers in honor of Bessie the dinosaur’s special day. Then we will march around the museum and hold a special parade for our Birthday Girl!

Dinosaur Egg Hunt with Bessie the Dinosaur
10:00 a.m., Children’s Discovery Museum
Come hunt for dinosaur eggs with Bessie, dinosaur mascot of The Discovery Museums! Dinosaur treasures are hidden inside each egg. The Special grand prize is a free membership to The Discovery Museums. What will you discover inside your eggs? Participants should bring a basket for their hunt. *Bessie is a costumed museum staff member.

The Justin Meyer Swing Trio
11:00 a.m., Bessie’s Tent
Come bring a picnic and your dancing shoes! It will be hard to keep your toes from tapping and your hands from clapping while listening to this fantastic group!

Bessie Needs a Bath!
Drop-in 11:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m., Children’s Discovery Museum
Bessie loves when children color her with chalk. Afterwards, plenty of soap bubbles and sponges will be on hand to ensure our favorite dinosaur gets nice and clean. Don’t forget in between her toes!

Wild Animals in Your Neighborhood! with Blue Hills Trailside Museum
Drop-in 1:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m., Science Discovery Museum
Enjoy a unique opportunity to see native animals up close with a trained naturalist from the Blue Hills Trailside Museum. Learn about wild birds, reptiles, and mammals that live in your neighborhood. Handle natural history artifacts and learn why it is important to care for and respect animals that still survive in the wild. For more information about The Blue Hills Trailside Museum, visit www.massaudubon.org. This “All About Animals” program is sponsored by the Rosemary Davis Memorial Fund.

Join Tom Foote and Greg Nikitas at this silly, strumming, dancing, drumming celebration!
We'll make music together with plenty of drums and other instruments to share, plus our voices and bodies for singing-a-long, clapping, and stomping fun. It's a percussion party for the whole family! *Outdoor, weather permitting.
