Planning is apparently underway for a hotel and retail complex to replace the shuttered Circle Cinema and Applebee’s site near Cleveland Circle.
The Boston Development Group sent the Boston Redevelopment Authority a letter of intent, starting that city’s review process, on Sept. 1. The developer proposes a 150-room hotel and 24,000 square feet of retail space, both on the Boston portion of the site.
Brookline, though, would bear much of the traffic, and the town this spring started studying that issue and development options across Chestnut Hill Avenue. To extend the Circle development into town would take a special permit, according to Kara Brewton, the town of Brookline’s economic development director.
“We need to decide how to make it worthwhile for the developer to work with us,” she said.
A meeting about development in the area — to be held without the developer — is scheduled for Oct. 6 at 7 p.m. in Brookline Town Hall , 333 Washington St.
