The adult education group's annual meeting was held late last month.

The following is an announcement from the Allston-Brighton Adult Education Coalition:

On Friday April 29, 2011, the Allston-Brighton Adult Education Coalition sponsored its annual “Meeting our Legislators and City Councilor” event at the Harvard Educational Portal at 175 N. Harvard Street in Allston which recognized three local businesses who have provided meaningful employment opportunities for Allston-Brighton’s adult learner population. Awards were presented to:

  • Dan Doherty, representing Kelly’s Roast Beef

  • Dan Grady, representing Star Market/Brighton Mills

  • Chuck and Sandy Delaney, owners of Allston Car Wash

Also, a highlight of the event was a presentation by seven local adult learners who shared their personal stories of overcoming significant barriers to achieve career development, obtain U.S. citizenship, or earn a GED, along with improving their English skills:

  • Jose Barrera from the Jackson/Mann Community Center

  • Lalitta Anthony, Shaqukurra Thon, and Joanne Walker from the Crittenton Women’s Union

  • Lucimara Rodriguez from the Gardner Pilot Academy

  • Roseclay Martins from The Literacy Connection

  • Tricia McGuirk from the Harvard Educational Portal

  • Helen Sinzker from the Brazilian Women’s Group/Vida Verde

Representative Kevin Honan, State Senator Sal DiDomenico and City Councilor Mark Ciommo attended. The Allston-Brighton Adult Education Coalition has been active for over 10 years, and functions as a collaborative organization that provides meaningful services to adult learners in the Allston-Brighton neighborhood and beyond.
