Best-selling novelist Colum McCann, whose book, Let the Great World Spin, won the 2009 National Book Award and worldwide acclaim, will be the keynote speaker at Boston College’s First Year Academic Convocation tonight in Conte Forum.

The book was read by all incoming BC freshmen and will be the subject of McCann's remarks Thursday evening, the college said.

His address, which begins at 7 p.m., will follow the annual “First Flight” procession across campus, a tradition where Jesuit priests offer a blessing and challenge BC’s newest students to answer the call of Jesuit founder St. Ignatius of Loyola to “Go set the world aflame,” according to a school press release.

School officials said McCann will join a long line of prominent past speakers to the First Year Convocation program, including President Barack Obama, US Sen. John McCain, and authors Ann Patchett, Jeanette Walls, J. R. Moehringer and Tracy Kidder.
