Franciscan Hospital for Children in Brighton has received a $10,000 donation from the Harvard Pilgrim Health Care Foundation that will help fund renovations to the hospital’s inpatient mental health unit.

The health care foundation is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year and to honor that milestone the foundation donated a total of $30,000 to three deserving charities: the Brighton hospital, a New Hampshire charity and another in Maine, according to a hospital press release.

As part of its "30k for 30y," employees at Harvard Pilgrim were given the chance to vote for one charity or organization of their choice in Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Maine, the three state the foundation serves.

“Our colleagues at Harvard Pilgrim are deeply invested in their communities,” Karen Voci, executive director of the foundation said in a statement. “As we celebrate our 30th anniversary as the Harvard Pilgrim Foundation in 2011, we are proud to support them to make a difference in the communities where they live and work.”

The donation to Franciscan Hospital for Children was presented Dec. 22., and will help fund renovations to the hospitals’ inpatient mental health unit, “transforming the existing nursing station into a less sterile, more comfortable relaxation station,” hospital officials said in a press release.

“Harvard Pilgrim Health Care and the Harvard Pilgrim Foundation have been involved with [Franciscan Hospital for Children] for many years in various capacities including participating in the annual 5K, attending the signature Friends Ball gala and volunteering in the Inpatient Mental Health Program,” the hospital’s release said. “Each month, the children enjoy time with HPHC staff who frequently bring pizza and play games with the children.”

“The visits from Harvard Pilgrim Health Care staff help break up the week for our kids, and shows them that people in the community care about them,” Ralph Buonopane, program director for the Inpatient Mental Health Program, added in a statement. “It also gives the kids a chance to interact and focus on the skills they’re working on.”
