The ninth annual Brian J. Honan 5K Road Race presented by New Balance is scheduled to tour parts of Allston and Brighton on Sunday, Sept. 23.

The charitable race is held in honor of the late City Councilor Brian J. Honan, a life-long neighborhood resident and Boston College alumnus who represented the Allston-Brighton district for more than seven years. In 2002, at age 39, he died of complications following surgery for cancer.

“Brian lived a life filled with purpose and spirit which transformed ideas into action,” said a statement from his older brother Kevin G. Honan, a State Representative for Brighton. “Brian’s vocation in serving the people of Boston – seniors, young people, community based workers and educators – left an unparalleled legacy that we are proud to honor and carry on through this great community road race.”

The event raises money to benefit scholarships for the Allston Board of Trade and the Brighton Board of Trade. The race also benefits the Brian J. Honan Charitable Fund, which aims to foster local and national programs supporting education, recreation, housing and healthcare.

Covering 3.1 miles, the family-friendly run/walk draws participants from competitive runners to families with strollers. The loop race begins at the Tavern in the Square bar and restaurant at 161 Brighton Ave. in Allston Village, passes through Union Square, onto Cambridge Street, and then onto Washington Street through Brighton Center before looping back to finish at Tavern in the Square.

The event is sanctioned by USA Track and Field. A pre-race stretching tent, pace car, water and timing stations and free long-sleeve race T-shirts for the first 1,000 race entrants will be available.

Post-race refreshments will be provided by Tavern in the Square.

The top three finishers in each category will receive medals, with the first place prizes furnished by New Balance.

“As a long-time member of the Allston-Brighton community, New Balance is proud to join State Representative Kevin Honan and the hundreds of local runners and walkers who support the important causes that Brian Honan championed throughout his lifetime,” company spokeswoman Amy Dow said in a statement.

To register, visit www.brianhonan.org, call race director Richard Grealish at 617-549-7503, or register on race day beginning at 9:30 a.m. at Tavern in the Square.

Participants may also collect race numbers on Sat., Sept. 22 from 11 a.m. to 3: p.m. at the New Balance Factory Store at 40 Life Street in Brighton.
