Four Boston Red Sox players, the team’s mascot and front office staff helped staff the Massachusetts Turnpike tolls booths in Allston-Brighton for one hour Thursday afternoon, greeting drivers and handing out schedules for the ballclub’s upcoming season, state transportation department officials said.

Drivers also got a free pass while the players worked the tolls from 3 p.m. to 4 p.m., according to transportation department spokesman Michael Verseckes. The Red Sox organization will reimburse the state for the cost of the fares.

Sox catcher Ryan Lavarnway, outfielder Ryan Kalish, pitchers Mark Melancon and Chris Carpenter and Wally the Green Monster were on tap to hand out 2013 season schedules to passing motorists at the Allston-Brighton tolls, Verseckes said.

The event is part of the team’s Holiday Road Trip presented by Coca Cola, which began Tuesday and ends Thursday, according to the team's website. The road trips leads into the Fenway Park Holiday Bash on Friday, which includes the debut of the an LED musical light-show performance on the Green Monster.

That event leads into the 10th annual Christmas at Fenway Presented by Stop & Shop on Saturday, when select tickets and ticket packages for many 2013 home games go on sale to the general public, the Sox' website said.
