City officials have ordered Tavern in the Square in Allston to close for one day for the establishment’s failure to call police about an alleged patron-on-patron fight in January.

The popular bar and restaurant near the busy intersection of Brighton and Harvard avenues went before the city’s licensing board earlier this month to respond to four sets of violations filed against it for altercations that occurred on three nights between late December and mid-February.

Three of the violation sets were dismissed: for an alleged fight between a bouncer and a patron on Dec. 23; and for two fights that allegedly broke out on Feb. 16 – one that involved patrons from a party bus brawling with other patrons and bouncers and another fight later that night between patrons.

But the bar was found to be in violation for failing to call police about an alleged patron-on-patron fight on Jan. 12. The licensing board issued a ruling on April 11 that the establishment will have to serve a one-day suspension.

The licensing board will select a suspension date and notify the bar via a written letter that is expected to be sent between four and six weeks before that chosen date, city officials said. The business can appeal the date that is chosen.

At the recent licensing board hearing, a lawyer for the Tavern in the Square told city officials the establishment plans to hire a police detail for its busiest nights and is adjusting the volume and genre of music it plays late at night in an effort to prevent violence there.
