Boston’s 10 most affordable neighborhoods for living car-free

Allston is the most affordable neighborhood to live in Boston without a car, according to a new ranking.

California-based real estate brokerage firm ZipRealty, Inc. and Seattle-based Walk Score created the list, which takes into account a combination of how affordable each neighborhood is and how accessible each neighborhood is for walking, biking and riding public transit.

"Home shoppers are increasingly looking for places to live where they can be less dependent on their cars," said a statement from Walk Score CEO Josh Herst. "The average American spends over $9,000 per year on their car. This is the equivalent of a $135,000 mortgage and the second-largest expense for many households. Moreover, people who live in walkable neighborhoods report being happier and healthier and, on average, weigh six to 10 pounds less."
