Residents of Allston and Brighton can now ride Harvard University’s shuttle buses that travel between the university’s campuses in Allston and Cambridge, university officials said.

The free service recently opened to residents of those neighborhoods after years of community interest.

Residents demanded access to ride Harvard’s shuttles, along with other promises from the university, this past spring. In exchange, residents agreed to support the university’s plan to relocate campus service facilities in Allston.

Harvard agreed to residents’ conditions, received city approval for the plans and is moving forward with the relocation project, which will clear room way for a larger mixed-use development that Harvard considers to be the first phase of larger campus expansion plans in Allston.
