The Arlington Land Trust has been awarded an $85,000 grant from the state for the purchase of Elizabeth Island on Spy Pond.
The grant was announced by state Secretary of Energy and Environmental Affairs Ian Bowles Thursday as part of $485,450 in conservation partnership grant funding for 2011.
The Arlington Land Trust announced in July that it was purchasing the two-acre Elizabeth Island from longtime owner Elaine Sacco for about a quarter of a million dollars.
Preserving the island has been a goal of state and Arlington officials for at least the last 20 years. The island sits in the center of Spy Pond, is a popular recreation destination and has a significant bird habitat.
The Land Trust worked with Mass Audubon to buy and preserve the island.
Bowles said in a press release Thursday that the conservation grants are designed to help nonprofit organizations purchase land for conservation or recreation.
In addition to Arlington, grants were also awarded for projects in Buckland, Conway, Dennis, Dudley, Mattapoisett, Newbury and West Boylston.
