Maynard High School Principal Laura Chesson has been named Arlington’s new assistant superintendent of schools.

Chesson, who was one of five finalists for the position, will start her new job in Arlington on July 1. Arlington Superintendent of Schools Kathleen Bodie had recommended Chesson for the job, and the School Committee voted unanimously in favor of her appointment last Thursday.

The School Committee is in the process of negotiating a contract with Chesson, according to a press release from the Arlington School Department Monday.

Chesson has also served as assistant principal at Leominster High School and the summer principal at the Boston Arts Academy. She’s also been a math teacher for the Hudson Public Schools and for a school district in New Mexico. She worked for IBM before becoming a teacher.

She will fill the assistant superintendent job that has been held on an interim basis in Arlington by Wallis Raemer. Other finalists for the job had been Sheryl Boris-Schacter, the principal of the Hunnewell Elementary School in Wellesley; Kerry Dunne, a director of history and social studies for Arlington Public Schools; Belmont High School Principal Michael Harvey; and Alexander Wyeth, the assistant superintendent for curriculum, instruction and assessment for Norwood Public Schools.
