West Nile Virus found in Arlington mosquitoes

Public health officials announced Thursday afternoon that West Nile Virus has been detected in mosquitoes collected from Arlington.

Arlington’s Department of Public Health issued a health advisory today after the state Department of Public Health reported the virus had been found in mosquitoes in the town.

The mosquito-borne virus can cause encephalitis, or swelling of the brain, and can be transmitted to humans through a bite of an infected mosquito.

The Arlington Health Department said the town is larvaciding all catch basins to prevent the growth of more mosquitoes. The town has posted on its website a list of tips for people to protect themselves from mosquito bites.
