Mass. Ave McDonald's closes, making way for new Berklee buildings

This Massachusetts Avenue McDonald's is closed to make way for Berklee College of Music's expansion.
The golden arches are gone at the McDonald's at the corner of Massachusetts Avenue and Belvidere Street. The restaurant shut last week, paving the way for Berklee College of Music's planned expansion.
In May, the city redevelopment authority approved the college's plans to add three new buildings with 500,000 square feet of dormitory, student life, performance and administrative space.
Someone posted a picture of the empty McDonald's on Twitter on August 11. As of Monday morning, the space was empty--except for a defunct soda machine and some trash bins--and a sign on the door read "Sorry, we are closed."
According to a Berklee spokeswoman, the McDonald's closure is related to Berklee's plans for a new building at that location.
The first phase of the school's expansion is a $100 million, 16-story mixed use building at 168 Massachusetts Avenue. In the spring, the college said construction was expected to begin this fall.
