Westbound Storrow Drive lanes revert to old configuration
Westbound Storrow Drive commuters have something to celebrate. The road has been restored to its pre-2009 configuration: two lanes heading toward Newton and one exiting toward Fenway/Kenmore.
The Globe reported that after the Department of Conservation and Recreation, which manages Storrow Drive, had made the switch in September 2009--resulting in one Newton lane and two lanes exiting toward Fenway/Kenmore--readers complained about traffic back-ups and dangerous conditions as drivers tried to adjust to the change.
In mid-August, the state Department of Transportation repaved, restriped, and re-established the former configuration, according to DCR spokesperson S.J. Port.
Traffic accident data should "no appreciable changes" with the change in 2009, she said, and the original decision to reduce the number of Newton-bound lanes came when work was being done in the area.
Now that the work is complete, Port said, it is "best to go back to the original configuration."
