After dedicated patrons spent more than a month mourning the expected closing of the Otherside Cafe, the vegetarian friendly restaurant and bar announced it will be staying open.

The Newbury Street staple, which was originally expected to close December 23 before extending its stay through January, took to its Facebook Wednesday to say it had earned a reprieve.

"We are no longer closing!!!! This is not a joke!! Just found out this morning!!," the cafe announced in a status update, which was confirmed by an employee at the restaurant.

The original announcement that the cafe was closing came as the popular Midwest furniture chain Room & Board looked to open its first Massachusetts store on the prominent corner where The Otherside Cafe is located.

Room & Board told the Globe in November it was considering multiple urban and suburban locations and had not finalized any plans.

When asked by excited Facebook fans how it was able to stay open, the restaurant replied, "the building we rent kicked us out before they had made the deal to replace, and then failed to make the deal. This makes me wanna watch the Goonies!"
