Two Boston teens attending Commonwealth School in the Back Bay have been named National Merit semifinalists.

Samuel Shapiro, son of Todd Shapiro and Stacy Segall of the Kenmore
Square neighborhood, and Curtis Stone, son of James and Cathleen Stone of Beacon Hill, were named semifinalist by the National Merit Scholarship Program, which recognizes students for their academic performance and scores on the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test.

The two students join about 16,000 students nationwide who have qualified as semifinalists. About 15,000 will become finalists before the scholarship winners are announced next year.

Nine other Commonwealth students were also named semifinalists. Over the last five years, 23 percent of Commonwealth seniors have been named as semifinalists, according to the school.
