A stately multi-million dollar mansion in the heart of Boston’s Back Bay could soon have a new owner after more than 3 years on the market.
Curbed Boston reports that a buyer has agreed to purchase the Ames-Webster mansion at the corner of Dartmouth Street and Commonwealth Avenue in the Back Bay.
The most recent asking price for the mansion was $18 million, Curbed reports.
The 50-room brick-faced mansion at 306 Dartmouth Street was built in 1872 and was home to industrialist and congressman Frederick Ames.
The estate was originally designed by architects Peabody and Stearns and in 1882 architect John Sturgis expanded the grandiose building.
The mansion is now owned by Reality Realty Trust, whose members include developer Neil St. John Raymond of the Raymond Property Co. and the founding members of the firm CBT Architects.
The mansion served as the corporate headquarters for Raymond Property and was also the base for CBT until 1999 when 20 businesses began sharing the 26,000 square-foot building.
One of the largest properties in the Back Bay, the Ames-Webster house also home to grand art and architecture.
Its 50 rooms include a solarium and a great hall measuring 18 by 63 feet.
There are 28 fireplaces; cherubs and seahorses are carved into the banisters of the grand staircase; chandeliers hang in many rooms; a stained glass skylight by artist John La Farge is framed by the mural "Justinian Cycle" by French painter Benjamin Constant.
The company marketing the property has told the Globe that the house could be used as a single family home, multi-family residences, or commercial office space.
