Charles Street will be closed for an hour Monday evening for the "Golden Broom" awards ceremony, where Mayor Thomas Menino and Beacon Hill residents will honor those in the neighborhood who have been diligent about sweeping their sidewalks.

Irving Street residents Jack and Mary Fitzgerald and Anna's Taqueria are the first "Golden Broom" campaign (motto: "Clean. Sweep. Repeat. Once a week.") award winners, chosen from community nominations.

According to the Beacon Hill Civic Association, the Fitzgeralds' neighbors note that the couple has "regularly swept the sidewalks, picked up litter and bagged it," for years.

At Anna's Taqueria, a local Mexican chain that has its flagship location at 242 Cambridge Street, "employees can be seen every morning in some way cleaning and washing the Cambridge Street and Garden Street sidewalks adjacent to their business."

The two recipients will be honored at 5:30 Monday evening in front of Charles Street Supply, 54-56 Charles Street. Mayor Menino and Beacon Hill Civic Association members will be on hand for the celebration.

Charles Street will be closed from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. Monday between Mt. Vernon Street and Chestnut Street.
