A new bank could appear on Charles Street as Capital One Bank looks to open a branch where Charles Street Market now stands.
The bank hopes to continue to expand in the state with a retail branch with ATMís at 62-66 Charles St, and plans to appear before the Beacon Hill Civic Associationís zoning and licensing committee Wednesday to ask the committee not to oppose a zoning variances needed to open the branch.
A portion of the building lies in a residential zone. While Charles Street Market has a variance to operate there, the bank needs the cityís Zoning Board of Appeal to approve a variance for it.
Charles Street Market had no comment as to whether the bankís plans signal a closing or move for the store, which sells basic groceries and prepared soups and sandwiches.
If Capital One does open at the proposed location, it would be the second bank to come to Charles Street recently. Hingham Institution for Savings opened its tenth location at 80 Charles St. in October.
The zoning and licensing committee is scheduled to meet at 7:30 p.m. at 74 Joy St.
