A Beacon Hill woman has been named Volunteer of the Year by the Boston Marathon Jimmy Fund Walk.

Jamie Brown is the first person to receive the newly established award that honors extraordinary volunteers who participate in Jimmy Fund's annual 26.2-mile walk along the Boston Marathon route benefiting the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.

Brown began volunteering after her mother, Diane Allison, was diagnosed with leiomyosarcoma, a soft tissue cancer, in 2007. Over the past five years, Brown has been captain of her team, Team Irish Eyes are Smiling; served as a co-site captain at the one of the event’s four starts, and raised nearly $18,000 for cancer research and care.

“When my mother was diagnosed with cancer, my family and I felt helpless,” Brown said. “We rallied around my mother to help her in every way. My family and I raised money through the walk, we held a pre-event fund-raiser one year, and my children raised money through a bake sale.”

Allison died in 2009, but Brown continued to walk.

“We do it to keep my mother’s memory alive and because we are grateful for the care she received at Dana-Farber,” she said.

In September, Brown will join an expected 9,000 walkers with the goal of raising $7.5 million for cancer research and care. Since 1989, the walk has raised nearly $80 million for Dana-Farber.

“Jamie is an unending source of support and enthusiasm for the event and is a true ambassador of Dana-Farber,” Ann Beach, director of the Boston Marathon Jimmy Fund Walk, said in a statement. “She is a model volunteer and fundraiser, always willing to lend a hand to help the walk surpass its goal.”
