Organizers for the Joey's Park Walkathon planned for Belmont this Sunday are expecting about 1,000 people to show up to the two-mile loop.

They hope to raise $50,000 to put toward building a new playground at Joey's Park, a neighborhood playground built by residents of Belmont in 1989 in honor of Joey O'Donnell, a Belmont boy who died at just 12 years old of cystic fibrosis.

Plans for a new park are already in the works - and the ideas for play structures came from Belmont children.

Walkers pay a $10 entry fee for individuals or a $20 fee for families and raise money to be donated. The fundraising deadline has been extended until Oct. 31, and people can sign up to walk right up until the walk begins.

The course kicks off at 2 p.m. The top fundraiser will get an iPad courtesy of Belmont Savings Bank.
