The Joey’s Park Walkathon surpassed its goal of raising $50,000 to put towards building a new playground in Belmont, collecting a total of $57,000, according to event organizers.

The walkathon, held in October, raised money for a new Joey’s Park. The original park, built in a community barn-raising in 1989, honors Joey O’Donnell, a Belmont boy who died at just 12 years old of cystic fibrosis. The park, much beloved by neighborhood children, is deteriorating, and some equipment has been removed.

Plans for a new park are already in the works. If you missed the walk, but still want to donate or get involved, check out the website here.
