The following is a press release from Beverly Hospital:

Beverly Hospital’s Medication Disposal Committee has been awarded a prestigious Collaboration Award at the annual “We Give Thanks” Awards, hosted by North Shore Elder Services and GateHouse Media. This award is given to recognize a creative partnership where the positive impact on seniors is greater than each separate nominee could achieve alone.

Beverly Hospital and Northeast Health System have been a leader in helping the North Shore to launch medical disposal programs to dispose of potentially dangerous prescription drugs safely. Proper disposal of medication helps to prevent potential abuse and accidental overdose, while also keeping the water supply and local rivers and lakes clean. Northeast Health System has helped Gloucester, Danvers, Beverly and Peabody launch such programs – which are some of the most successful in New England.

“We are honored and thrilled to be this year’s recipient of the Collaboration Award,” said Northeast Health System Community Relations Manager Gerald MacKillop, who played an integral role in helping to launch the program two years ago.  “The medical disposal program has been so successful in removing potentially dangerous drugs from homes and off the streets because of the team work of all of our community partners, including our hospitals and police and public health departments.”

Beverly City Councilor Kevin Hobin nominated the Beverly Medication Disposal Committee, which includes MacKillop, Beverly Health Director Bill Burke, Beverly Police Officer Mark Panjwani and Beverly Public Health Nurse Pat Zingariello, for the award.

Founded in 1976, North Shore Elder Services is a team of specialists making life easier for elders and those who care for them. The organization offers information, support, and solutions on a variety of aging issues.

The award was announced at North Shore Elder Services’ “We Give Thanks” Awards Dinner, on Nov. 18th at Danversport Yacht Club.
