The Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority on Dec. 9 unveiled design plans for the parking garage it plans to build on a 1.5-acre site the transit authority owns at Rantoul and Court streets in downtown Beverly.

Design plans show a four-level garage capable of accommodating more than 500 vehicles. The garage would provide much-needed parking for the 2,219 commuters who board at Beverly Depot each day, making the depot the second busiest commuter rail station north of Boston.

The privately owned garage by the station now has a 2.5-year wait list for a parking space. Spill over commuter parking is adversely impacting the surrounding residential and commercial streets.
