Schools are closed and a parking ban remains in effect in Beverly today as early morning snow turns into sleet.

As of this morning some Essex County communities already experienced close to a foot of snow, said Alan Dunham, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Taunton.

Dunham expected snow from early this morning to give way to sleet, and then resume in the evening hours when forecasts predict precipitation will end.

"The morning commute wasn't fun and the afternoon commute will probably be even less fun," Dunham said.

The parking ban, which went into effect yesterday at 2 p.m., will be lifted tomorrow afternoon, according to Beverly's website.

Parking is available at the following municipal lots:

Franklin Place and Washington Street (between the two streets)
Pond Street (behind Casa Da Moda)
Pond Street (at American Legion/Spear Post)
Railroad Avenue (1886 House)
Congress Street and Summit Avenue (public lot)
Chapman Street and Federal Street (behind Family Dollar)
Court Street (NO OVERNIGHT PARKING)

Questions and concerns can be directed to theDepartment of Public Services at 978-921-6053.
