The following was submitted by People’s United Bank:

BRIDGEPORT, CT – People’s United Bank has donated 300 backpacks filled with school supplies to three North Shore organizations that will distribute them to children and families served by those organizations. The backpacks will benefit 100 children at each organization and help alleviate the financial burdens associated with back-to-school time for many families.

The organizations receiving the backpacks are: Beverly Bootstraps Community Services in Beverly, Children’s Friends and Family Services in Salem, and Citizens for Adequate Housing, in Peabody.  Each organization provides assistance to low-income children and families through a variety of programs aimed at helping families achieve stability and self-sufficiency.

“People’s United Bank is pleased to do its part to ensure children have the necessary supplies to start the school year off right,” said Timothy Crimmins, President, Massachusetts Region, for People’s United Bank. “We understand the high costs associated with getting children back to school, and the backpacks are one way we can help provide financial relief for families.”

“We want to make sure that every child has an equal opportunity at academic success,” said Kevin Noyes, Community Development and CRA Officer at People’s United Bank. “This is a first small step in that direction.”

“We are thrilled to receive the donation from People’s United Bank,” said Sue Gabriel, Executive Director of Beverly Bootstraps Community Services. “Last year over 600 families came to Bootstraps in need of school supplies, and we expect that number to be even higher this year. The donation from People’s United Bank will help us meet the needs of even more families in this new school year.”

Carla M. Saccone, President and CEO for Children’s Friends and Family Services, also expressed her gratitude for the donation. “The backpacks will be distributed throughout our four sites and will benefit the children with the greatest need,” she said. “Having the essential school supplies will be one less obstacle for the families as they work to overcome their difficulties.”

“The 100 backpacks will allow us to provide all the children in our shelters, including those who have recently moved out of our programs, with the school supplies they need,” noted Elaine Miller, Director of Development at Citizens for Adequate Housing. “It’s a huge cost savings to our families, which allows them to make other necessary purchases.”
