A Beverly man who pleaded guilty last month to carrying out a number of violent robberies north of Boston last year, including one in Salem and one in Peabody, pleaded guilty on Thursday to robbing a Westford liquor store last October.

Michael Whitcomb, 41, was sentenced to seven to nine years in state prison for the incident in Westford by Judge Janet Kenton-Walker in Lowell Superior Court, The sentence is to be served concurrently with the up to 10 years he is serving in state prison for five robberies last fall.

According to a statement from the office of Middlesex District Attorney Gerry Leone, Whitcomb attacked a female clerk on October 4, 2011, punching her in the head and face, at a liquor store on Littleton Road in Westford before stealing approximately $300 from the cash register and fleeing the scene.

The victim's son, who was in the basement when the attack began, ran after Whitcomb in an attempt to stop him as he jumped into a waiting car. The victim was transported to Lowell General Hospital where she was treated for her injuries.

The entire thing was captured on surveillance video, and Whitcomb was arrested on October 27, according to the statement.

"This defendant has now admitted to robbing a liquor store and, in the process of doing so, viciously attacked the female clerk, injuring the victim, before taking money from the register and fleeing the scene," Leone said in a statement. "We commend the bravery of the victim, as well as the victim's son who heard his mother's cry for help and intervened, causing the defendant to flee."

Last month, Whitcomb was sentenced to up to 10 years in prison for stabbing a Peabody man in the leg during a robbery last fall, as well as robbing a convenience store in Salem, a liquor store in Georgetown, and twice robbing Skip's Country Store in Rowley.
