Troops 6 and 2 of the Beverly Boy Scouts are holding the fifth annual electronics recycling event which gives residents a way to responsibly get rid of their old, broken and unused electronics.
“Operation No Landfill V,” which also raises money for the Beverly Boy Scouts, will be held on Saturday March 23 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Immanuel Church on Bridge Street. A nominal fee for the recycling service applies.
Not only does the event give residents an opportunity to responsibly recycle unwanted electronics, but it’s a learning experience for the scouts as well
“They learn about recycling and the environment and that’s the big thing from the Boy Scouts,” said Ron Zabilski, treasurer of Troop 6. “Leave an area better than when you found it.”
Zabilski added that the scouts, who fall between ages 11 and 18, put flyers up around town and lend a hand in pickups and drop-offs, assisting in taking the equipment out of the cars and bringing them over to the company that’s doing the recycling.
At last year’s event, the scouts collected 879 pieces, up 339 from 2011, but Zibilski said he’s not anticipating such high numbers this year.
“There are a lot of organizations that are doing this kind of recycling so there’s competition for fundraising as well as collecting the items,” Zabilski said. “The idea is to do as best we can, remove these items from going into landfills or being left on the side of the road and providing an opportunity for people to ecologically take care of their wasted electronics.”
Materials up for collection are TV sets, computers, monitors, radios, microwaves, cell phones, batteries, exercise equipment and air conditioners, among other things. Products that will not be accepted at the event are refrigerators, large kitchen and laundry appliances, gas powered equipment, car batteries, mercury products and fluorescent bulbs.
Recycled materials will be collected by East Coast Electronics Recycling, a qualified electronics disposal firm, located in Shirley. A third party then processes the products.
