The race to fill the first open mayoral seat in Beverly in almost 18 years has officially begun.

Candidate Michael Cahill is hosting a free campaign kickoff tonight at the Italian Community Center on Rantoul Street from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Light refreshments will be served.

"We've had a lot of enthusiastic support," Cahill said. "The campaign organization is coming together very well and I'm excited about articulating the vision I have for this city moving forward."

Cahill, 51, was a state representative from 1993 to 2003 and also served as Beverly’s City Council president from 2010 until 2012.

He is currently the executive director of the Alliance of Massachusetts YMCAs.

The lifelong Beverly resident will face Ward 2 City Councillor Wes Slate and Euplio "Rick" Marciano in the upcoming campaign season.

Following tonight's campaign, kickoff, Cahill said he plans on going "full-speed ahead," and start knocking on residents' doors and continuing to reach out to people.
