On Friday, August 16, from 9 to 11:30 a.m., Beverly Hospital staff will administer ImPACT (Immediate Post-Concussion Assessment and Cognitive Testing) baseline testing to the Beverly High School football team in the school’s cafe. The baseline reading being taken now can be used later to determine if an athlete who has suffered a head injury can still play, or should receive further treatment for a concussion. In addition to the BHS football team, all other fall sports teams will also participate in the ImPACT baseline assessment. Funding for the school to purchase the software for the testing was provided by Beverly Hospital

According to the CDC, emergency departments in the U.S. treat nearly 175,000 sports-related traumatic brain injuries in children and adolescents annually. Of all sports, football accounts for the highest number of incidents: over 55,000.
