The following was submitted by the Glen Urquhart School:

Each year Glen Urquhart School, through the generosity of former parents Richard and Donna Tadler, awards a grant to a member of the faculty to spend part of the summer expanding their professional knowledge and to enhance their teaching in the classroom. The grant is awarded based on the potential for the experience to have a positive and lasting impact on the school's program.

This past summer Kindergarten teachers Sandra Thoms and Amy Billings were awarded the Tadler Grant, which they used to travel to the island of Nevis. They taught classes in sewing, jewelry making, painting and drawing to students ages 8-15 years old.  They attended Nevis' annual summer festival, Culturama, where they learned about the art, music and history of the island. They also met with several local artists to enlist their support for the students, who had an interest in continuing their art studies

Each year the kindergartners at Glen Urquhart continue to learn about life in Nevis, by exploring information and news about life on the island. Thoms has been traveling there since 1999, teaching lessons at the school and, through the generosity of the Glen Urquhart community, she has donated much needed supplies, including several hundred books. “Although this school (in Nevis) does a very good job of educating children in grades K-6, they lack the necessary resources to fulfill all of their goals and presently, there is no yearlong art curriculum”, said Thoms.

With the goal of growing the arts and the longstanding cultural exchange between the school children of Nevis and Glen Urquhart students and staff, Thoms hopes to establish and lead a Special Arts Program for children in Nevis in the spring of 2014.
