Ultra Electronics Ocean Systems of Braintree was awared a $49.2 million contract to supply the US Navy with TR-317/353 submarine transducers, the Pentagon announced this week.

According to the Pentagon, the devices use sonar to detect and localize targets, and large numbers of the units are stocked by the Navy to support the fleet requirements for new and restored units.

According to company President Bill Terry, Ultra Electronics is in the final year of a five-year contract to produce transducers, and the new contract is also for five years.

The units will be produced in Braintree, with production scheduled to end in 2017, Terry said.

The awarding of the contract takes place as the company marks its 50th year in business, Terry said, and anniversary celebrations are planned for this summer.
