Braintree Police and transit authorities temporarily shut down access to the parking garage at the Braintree MBTA station this afternoon after a suspicious package was identified in a car.
According to Joshua Robin, a spokesperson for the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority, the busway and garage were closed as authorities investigated, only to find that the suspicious item was a piece of exercise equipment.
"The car was checked by Transit Police and the garage was cleared to re-open at 3 p.m. today. A piece of home exercise equipment in a slightly ajar car trunk was the cause for alarm," he said in an email.
Commuters on scene reported that bomb squad personnel, crime scene investigators, and numerous police officers were at the site. Commuters had to wait a little less than an hour before being given access to their cars.
