With the busiest travel holiday at hand for Logan Airport, transportation officials are urging people to use public transportation and be patient as they travel to and from the airport.

After two weeks of Massachusetts Port Authority specials urging business travelers to take the Logan Express to the airport, leisure travelers are encouraged to do the same.

“The Logan Express is always a good option to travelers, and it drops you off in front of each terminal,” said Richard Walsh, spokesperson for MassPort.

The terminals, located in Braintree, Peabody, Framingham, and Woburn, can help people avoid the parking costs and confusion once they arrive at the airport.

Additionally, specials through the MBTA are being offered this holiday season encouraging people to use the Silver Line to get to and from the airport.

According to Walsh, the Silver Line has direct service to each of the airport’s terminals and will drop customers off exactly where they need to be.

And through Jan. 6, there will be free bus service on the Silver Line from all Logan terminals to South Station.

“You can get right on the Silver Line without having to pay a fare from the airport,'' Walsh said. "The reason we encourage that and why we’re offering the free fare is we’re trying to raise awareness for our travelers for public transport to the airport."

From Braintree, customers can access the Silver Line by taking the Red Line to South Station or Downtown Crossing and transferring to the Silver Line.

For those picking up travelers, MassPort has added amenities this holiday season, including a cell phone parking lot with free Wi-Fi to help better track flights.

“We have also unveiled a new web-optimized website. So when you’re on your cell pone, the info you’re looking for appears on your device in a very user-friendly manner,” Walsh said. “We’re trying to reach out and offer those amenities our customers are looking for.”

The changes are coming just in time, as MassPort officials expect the number of travelers in and out of Logan Airport this year to break previous records.

In a typical day, Logan flies approximately 94,000 passengers. This year, that number is expected to jump to 110,000 passengers.

Christmas will also be busy, though less so than Thanksgiving, Walsh said.

On the Sunday and Monday following Thanksgiving, returning customers will also flood the airport.

“So after that we’ll dispatch 10,000 cabs, when we would typically dispatch 5,000 cabs, so that gives you a sense of how busy that will be,” Walsh said.

With such a busy holiday, Walsh said there was a collective sigh of relief that the weather has held up, which has enabled things to go smoothly for travel this week.

As for the coming days ahead, Walsh urged customers to give themselves enough time for their travel and to be patient.

“We always tell people give yourself that extra time. Check with the airport so you know you status. [Give yourself] two hours for domestic flights, three hours for international. And Be patient - that would be my advise. Be patient,” he said.
