Braintree police are investigating an alleged assault at Mattulina Playground that sent two men to the hospital with stab wounds.

According to police, an off-duty police officer was driving by the playground shortly before 6 p.m. on Sunday when he saw a group of individuals fighting. The officer then heard gunshots and everyone fled the area.

A 21-year-old from Braintree suffered a minor laceration to his hand. He was transported to South Shore Hospital by ambulance

Later, a 24-year-old man was driven to South Shore Hospital by his father. He too had suffered several stab wounds.

Police dogs, specifically trained to locate firearms, responded from both Quincy and Weymouth to search the playground but could not find any firearms or knives.

One of the individuals at the playground later confirmed that two shots were fired.

“This investigation is on-going, but from what we know at this point, this was not a random attack,” said Chief Russell Jenkins in a release.
