A couple from New York was arrested on Wednesday after police at the South Shore Plaza in Braintree allegedly caught them stealing thousands of dollars of merchandise.

According to police, a store officer at Hollister observed the couple walk by the store carrying what he believed was a “booster” bag. Booster bags are typically large bags lined with tinfoil to fool security alarms.

The officer followed the couple into Macy’s, where he reported seeing them stuffing cosmetics into the bag and then leaving the store and walking to their car. The mall officer called police.

A Braintree officer was entering the parking garage when he observed a vehicle matching the description given by the mall officer. The officer stopped the vehicle and searched the car, finding the booster bag along with several other bags in the back seat, police said.

According to police, the car contained over $3,500 of cosmetics, long with almost $3,000 in merchandise allegedly stolen from the Ann Taylor outlet store in Wrentham and a pocketbook, valued at $145, allegedly stolen from Lord & Taylor.

Giannina Gonzales, 39, and Richard J. Zapata, 39, both from Elmhurst, N.Y., were arrested and charged with larceny over $250, and two counts of receiving stolen property over $250.
