Third arrest made in Braintree online meet-up gone bad

Police have made a third arrest in a case involving three people who allegedly robbed a man that one of the suspects met through the Internet.

According to police, two women and a man allegedly met a 21-year-old Rockland man at the softball fields behind Flaherty School on Sunday evening. He went thre expected to meet a he met online.

After the woman approached the victim, a man and another woman wearing bandanas over their faces approached the victim from behind. Police said the man was carrying a pipe and the woman was carrying a handgun.

The couple demanded money and a struggle ensued. The victim was hit in the head with the pipe and the three suspects stole money and left. The victim drove himself to South Shore Hospital for a minor injury.

Police arrested the two female suspects that evening after one was identified by the victim.

Detectives following up on the robbery identified the male suspect a few days later.

Viet Van Nguyen, 27, of Randolph was subsequently arrested at his Dorchester workplace on Tuesday afternoon and charged with armed robbery while masked, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, and conspiracy.
