Brookline has fifth-highest PhD ratio

The community of Leverett, north of the college town of Amherst, has the highest concentration of doctorates in the state, but several towns and cities near Boston rank high as well, according to a Snapshot compilation by the Globe's Matt Carroll.

Leverett has 121.3 PhD's per 1,000 residents, according to the compilation, based on 2008 data from Claritas.

Of Boston-area communities, the town of Lexington ranked No. 4 with 74.6. Brookline has the fifth-highest number of people with doctorates in the state, with 67.9 PhD's per 1,000 residents.

Cambridge, home to Harvard and MIT, was No. 7 with 61.8. Belmont came in at 10 with 54.1. Newton was ranked 18th with 42.5 PhD's per 1,000.

The state median was 6.6 PhD's per 1,000. The city of Boston ranked 100th on the statewide list, with 11.8 PhD's per 1,000 residents.
