Spring is finally here, and bicyclers throughout the region are getting ready for prime pedaling seasons.

In Needham, the group Needham Bikes is preparing for National Bike Week and National Bike Month events in May. The events will include a bicycle tune-up workshop by local bike shop Dedham Bike, a Friday ride from Needham into Boston, and a "Tour de Needham" ride.

The Tour de Needham ride "would be a gathering to celebrate our new bike signs that will appear on selected roads in Needham in May, and an 8-mile group ride looping around the town to observe the new signs," according to a Needham Bikes email.

Boston Bike Week begins May 17, and will kick off in Boston with a bike ride and celebration sponsored by City Hall and Mayor Thomas Menino. A map with route information is featured here.

Statewide, bicycle events include a bike-a-thon in Brookline on May 16 in support of the Alyn Hospital, and bike to work challenges in Andover and Salem.

Leading up to Bike Week, MassBike will host their annual Bike Night gala fundraiser. The event is on May 15 and tickets are $40, with all proceeds benefitting the organization.

In Newton, Bike Newton says that the city will have its 3rd annual Rally and Friends and Family ride takes place from 12-3 on May. 16. The Newton Streets and Sidewalks blog reports that Newton is taking its first steps toward a designated bike lane on Beacon Street.
