It may have closed its Harvard Square store over the summer, but The Globe Corner Bookstore’s influence is back on the map in Brookline.

Brookline Booksmith has teamed up with The Globe Corner Bookstore to help build a new wall map department at the independently-owned store in Brookline’s Coolidge Corner.

The Globe Corner Bookstore closed its Harvard Square store over the summer after 29 years, but store President Pat Carrier said his business continues to operate an online map and specialty store and he is now doing consultant work to help bricks and mortar bookstores expand their cartographic selection.

Carrier said with fewer chain bookstores it is becoming very difficult for consumers to find retail outlets for cartographic products.

“Locally, there was a great opportunity, with the closing of the Globe Corner’s retail store, for a strong independent bookseller like Brookline Booksmith to step into this niche formerly occupied by The Globe Corner,” Carrier said in an email Friday.“It has been a great pleasure to be work with Booksmith on building their map department.”

Booksmith co-owner Dana Brigham said in a press release today that her store’s new department offers the largest selection of wall maps in Massachusetts with more than 50 different wall maps.

The Booksmith is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year, and Brigham said the store will be working with The Globe Corner Bookstore more in the New Year and changes to the store’s travel section could come in early 2012.

Carrier said he thinks reference products such as wall maps offer a clear opportunity for booksellers seeking to focus on “Kindle/IPAD proof” merchandise.

He said the Booksmith is the only retailer in the Boston market that The Globe Corner Store will collaborate with.

The new map department at the Booksmith is in the lower level of the store at 279 Harvard St.
