The holiday shopping season is drawing near and Brookline is gearing up for the 16th Annual First Light Festival in local business districts.

More than 60 businesses will participate in this year’s festival, which will be held Thursday, Nov. 29 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. in business districts throughout the town from Coolidge Corner to Washington Square and Brookline Village.

Andy Martineau, an economic development planner for Brookline, said the opening ceremony for this year’s festival will be held at Town Hall at 5 p.m. and will feature the work of Brookline Village light artists Alejandro and Moira Siña and a dance performance by the Peanut Butter & Jelly Dance Company.

Circus performers, including jugglers and acrobats, will join other entertainment and art displays in the commercial areas.

Martineau said part of the idea behind the festival is to get people to shop at local businesses during the holiday season before they head out to malls or shop online.

“It’s about getting people out to enjoy the community, but if they spend a little money in the local economy that is great, too,” he said.

More information about festival can be found online at www.brooklinema.gov/firstlight or on Facebook.
