Brookline Police have seized what they said was an illegally possessed firearm and arrested two men on drug charges following a traffic stop on Route 9 Tuesday night.

Mohamed Soltani, 22, of Melrose, is facing multiple drug charges and has been charged with illegal possession of a firearm. He is expected to be arraigned in Brookline District Court today along with his passenger, Luis Sandoval-Pena, 17, of East Boston, who was also arrested on several drug possession charges.

Brookline Police said they were conducting speed enforcement Tuesday night at 10:20 p.m. when they stopped a vehicle Soltani was driving in the area of 830 Boylston Street/Route 9.

A police officer detected a strong odor of marijuana from the vehicle, and police said both men appeared to be extremely nervous.

After spotting what they believed to be marijuana in the car, Brookline Police said the two men were taken from the vehicle and police found additional packages of a substance believed to be marijuana. Under the driver’s seat, police said they also found a loaded 9mm firearm.
