A Boston bomb squad responded to items reported as possible bomb-making materials found in Brookline Tuesday, but police said they now believe the items were instead used to manufacture drugs.

Now Brookline Police are investigating the previous owner of a storage unit where the items were found after the unit was sold at auction, said Brookline Police Lt. Philip Harrington.

The Boston bomb squad responded to Longwood Storage at 5 Station St. in Brookline Village about 9:40 a.m. after the new owner of the storage unit reported finding bomb-making materials inside.

Harrington said the new owner of the storage unit, a Boston firefighter whose name has not been released, had just purchased the storage unit at auction. Police temporarily closed the street to accommodate emergency vehicles that responded, but none of the neighboring businesses were asked to close.

Once police determined that the items were used to manufacture drugs, the scene was turned over to a hazardous materials team.

Harrington said police are investigating whether to seek any criminal charges against the previous owner of the storage unit, whose name has not been released.

A woman named Elena who answered the phone at Longwood Storage Tuesday and described herself as the manager, said the storage unit was sold at an auction Monday because the previous owner had not been making the payments.

Elena, who declined to give her last name, said the business had no idea what was inside the storage unit because they are not allowed to look inside until the unit is opened for the auction.
