Brookline Police have charged an employee in the town’s engineering division with larceny by embezzlement for allegedly misappropriating public funds.

Joshua Layne, an administrative assistant in the engineering division of Brookline’s Department of Public Works will be arraigned in Brookline District Court on Wednesday, according to a statement released by Brookline Police Tuesday.

He was arrested Monday on a charge of larceny by embezzlement, according to police. Police said Layne was arrested following an investigation into allegations that he was involved in misappropriation of money received by Brookline’s Department of Public Works.

He has worked for the town for approximately eight years and has been placed on paid administrative leave pending the results of a disciplinary hearing, which Town Counsel Joslin Ham Murphy said is expected to be held imminently.

The police department’s statement said the town considers the misappropriation of public funds to be an extraordinarily serious offence and requires strict employee compliance with the state conflict of interest laws and the town’s policy against fraudulent conduct, misappropriation and corruption.

The statement said that because the investigation and the town’s administrative process are ongoing, the town is unable to provide any further comments at this time.

Brookline Police Lt. Philip Harrington declined Tuesday to say where Layne was arrested.
