A gas main break shut down a portion of Middlesex Turnpike in Burlington near Third Avenue for a few hours today, snarling traffic and forcing several businesses in the to evacuate, said public safety officials.
The break happened when National Grid contractors were installing a new main for a development project near the intersection of the turnpike and Third Avenue, said National Grid spokeswoman Deborah Drew.
“The damaged main is shut off. The area is under control and safe,” said Drew. “No customers were affected. All have gas service.”
She said workers anticipate to have repairs done by the end of the day.
Traffic was being re-routed from Burlington Mall Road down to Fourth Avenue, but the turnpike is now open, according to Burlington police.
