The Cambridge Dance Party set for Friday night has drawn big crowds in previous years. Submitted photo by Charles Daniels.

A portion of Massachusetts Avenue in Central Square will be closed Friday night as thousands of people are expected to attend the city’s annual Dance Party.

About 5,000 to 6,000 people filled the avenue in front of Cambridge City Hall for last year’s dance party, said city spokeswoman Ini Tomeu.

Massachusetts Avenue between Inman and Bigelow streets will be closed to traffic during the dance party, which will run from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m.

The dance party is free and open to the public. It was first conceived in 1996 as part of the city’s 150th anniversary celebration.

The city is advising commuters to take the Red Line subway to travel between Central and Harvard Square during the dance party. The MBTA #1 Bus Line will terminate in Central Square at 6 p.m. and resume full service at 11:30 p.m. For more information, contact Maryellen Carvello at 617-349-4301.
