Several thousand people will be dancing in the street in Central Square Friday night as Cambridge holds its annual Dance Party in front of City Hall.
A portion of Massachusetts Avenue between Inman and Bigelow streets at the heart of Central Square will be closed to traffic during the Dance Party, which will run from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. Friday, 29.
A DJ will spin music for the free dance extravaganza, which drew thousands of people last year and is free and open to the public. After dark, colorful lights will be turned on to keep the party going.
The dance party was conceived in 1996 as part of the city’s 150th anniversary celebrations.
Friday beginning at 6 p.m., the MBTA’s #1 bus line will terminate in Central Square because of the party and won’t resume full service until 11:30 p.m. The city is advising people to use the Red Line subway to travel from Central Square to Harvard Square during the party.
