18 Cambridge parking spots to be transformed Friday

Cambridge and partners from around the city will convert 18 parking spots into temporary public spaces Friday as part of International PARK(ing) Day.

The metered parking spots are being temporarily transformed Friday to call attention to the need for more urban open space and generate debate about how public space is created. The first Park(ing) Day was held in San Francisco in 2005.

The Cambridge’s Community Development Department is working with local businesses, artists and organizations to transform the parking spots located at various spots around the city.

Cambridge Mayor Henrietta Davis will be participating in the celebrations by transforming a spot at City Hall on Massachusetts Avenue into an outdoor water bar that will serve Cambridge tap water to people passing by.

Other groups and organizations that will be transforming parking spots in the city include the Harvard Graduate School of Design, Cambridge Community Television, the MIT Museum, the East Cambridge Dog Owners Group, The Democracy Center, the Central Square Business Association and more.
